| A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware Author: Jeffrey S. Evans and Scott Hamilton Suter, Co-Curators.
Published: 2004
Pages: 180
Description: This catalog accompanies the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society's 2004 exhibit of A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware: The Rockingham County, Virginia School of Folk Pottery. The story told here is about the stone and earthenware made in Rockingham County, and yet it is also a story told by those wares. The pieces here reflect the potters who made them, but they also tell about the people who used them. The history of any folk pottery tradition is also the history of the community that found the ware useful and its designs acceptable. This gathering of Rockingham County Pottery may be the first time that such a number has been together since the final kiln was fired at some unknown shop. As such, this is the first opportunity to see what the pieces reveal as they reflect common techniques, variations or form, as well as idiosyncrasies. While many aspects of the tradition remained the same throughout the nineteenth century--the continuity of some forms and mediums, for instance--other features changed--such as the cessation of cobalt decoration and the disappearance of other forms.
